Non-Toxic Living – Ways to Reduce the Toxic Load
How to go green, sustainable, and environmentally safe.
Recommendations for a safe indoors and outdoors –
for people and pets.
By Gloria Gilbčre, N.D., D.A.Hom., Ph.D.
I’m so excited to bring you my new section, Non-Toxic Living! I’ll be adding new information often that will include recommendations and tips to help you create and maintain an environment as free from toxins as possible.
The truth: We are living in a toxic world. We can't escape it anymore. From the air we breathe, the water we drink — to the clothes we wear, the fabrics in our bedding, rugs and furniture and the cleaning products we use — to the personal care products we use every day — our bodies are continually bombarded creating a “toxic overload” which leads to health problems such as Invisible Illnesses, Multiple Allergic Response Syndromes (MARS) and more.
Chemical toxicity comes in many seemingly innocent disguises.
For example, let's take fragrances: Advertisements strive to make us feel that we do not have a really “nice” or “clean” home unless “air fresheners” are supplied in bathrooms, kitchens, and generally around the house. I call them “air poisoners” in the home.
Did you know that:
9 out of 10 breaths are likely drawn indoors
15-25% of our population has some breathing problems such as hay fever or asthma, and are adversely affected by strong odors included in perfume, aftershave, hair spray and body lotions
there was a 38% increase in prescriptions for airway medications from 1985 to 1990
5% of chemicals used in fragrances are petroleum-based synthetic compounds
there are about 4,000 individual fragrance compounds – several hundred may be used in creating a single scent
environmental discomforts and illnesses are increasing at alarming rates
17-22% of people suffer from fragrance-related migraines
reactions from scented products result in sick time, lost productivity, increased insurance costs and hostility from employers and employees who do not understand the health threats of fragrances
sensitive individuals cannot simply avoid fragrances; they share air in which they have no control other than through education and sensitivity
Imagine what simple changes you make will mean to your health, the health of your loved ones, the health of your pets — and the environment. I’ll teach you step-by-step how to clean up your air space, your living space, your personal space, so you can enjoy a more healthy life in a more healthful environment! Please stay tuned.
